Adjusting the Idle Mixture on a Motorcraft
The idle mixture screw should be set at 1 1/2 - 2 turns from bottom. This is the factory setting. Once the carburetor is installed and warmed up you will need to do a final adjustment. You may have a carburetor problem, or a vacuum leak when the engine doesn't seem to respond to  turning the screws in or out.

Hook up a tach to the engine.
Set the idle to the manufactures specification.
Turn each idle mixture screw in 1/4 a turn, then wait for the engine to catch up, about 2 seconds. When the rpm starts to drop turn the idle mixture screw back out 1/2 a turn. That should be the optimal setting.

Anti-Stall Dashpot Adjustment

Whenever the throttle plate is suddenly closed, the engine will starve for the fuel-air mixture. Very often the engine will actually die. To prevent this, a dashpot is installed to assist in slowly closing the throttle plate until the carburetor idle circuit can take over and provide the proper air-fuel mixture to keep the engine running. The adjustment of the dashpot is often overlooked when other adjustments are made.

The following adjustment procedure is suggested.
Loosen the dashpot locknut.
Open choke plate manually, and hold the throttle plate closed.
Check the clearance between the throttle lever and the dashpot plunger tip. You can use a drill bit of the specified dimension (check your repair manual). Hold the plunger in a depressed position with a screwdriver blade while making this check.
Turn the whole dashpot body in its bracket until the specified clearance is obtained.
Tighten the locknut.

Solenoid Throttle Positioner Adjustment

The solenoid throttle positioner is used to curb the dieseling effect when the engine is turned off.

The following adjustment procedure is suggested:

Slide the solenoid in its bracket to obtain a preliminary adjustment.
Disconnect the ignition switch lead.
Adjust to 5/16" clearance between the end of the solenoid plunger and the throttle lever.
Observe the specified high - low rpm specifications in your repair manual.
Adjust the throttle stop screw to obtain the low rpm, with the solenoid lead disconnected.
Adjust the solenoid plunger to obtain high rpm, with the solenoid lead reconnected.

Fast Idle Adjustment

The fast idle adjusting screw contacts one edge of the fast idle cam. The cam permits a faster engine idle speed for smoother running when the engine is cold during choke operation. As the choke plate is moved through its range of travel, from closed to open, the fast idle cam pick up lever rotates the fast idle cam. Each position on the fast idle cam permits a slower idle rpm as the engine temperature rises and choking action is reduced.

Make sure the curb idle speed and mixture settings are adjusted before attempting to set the fast idle.

The follow adjusting procedure is suggested:

With the engine at normal operating temperature, air cleaner removed and tach attached, manually rotate the fast idle cam until the fast idle adjusting screw rests on the second step of the fast idle cam.
Turn the fast idle adjusting screw inward or outward, as required to obtain the specified fast idle rpm.
